After School Studio

Students in our classes

The goal of our after school class is to provide a studio learning experience where time in the studio becomes a part of the weekly routine. We will begin with introductions to the different media available in the studio and move toward longer term projects and an on-going exploration of the creative process. Materials introduced will include paint, clay, collage, drawing, and printing. Students will be encouraged to work from personal interests and bring ideas from experiences at home and in school.

Learning to Write Adventure Stories: Exploring Fairy Tales and the Hero's Journey

Students in our classes

Taught by Eileen Yaeger

Students will enter the writing process with a simple hands-on art experience, followed by an on-going writers workshop. The children will experience visual, kinesthetic, and verbal modes of thinking during each stage of the writing process. Attention will be given to setting, mood, sequencing, and character and plot development, in both pictures and words (based on some of the approaches of Beth Olshansky.)

Art Explorers - Journey Through Artistic Media

Students in our classes

Our youngest artists will work with a parent or caregiver to explore clay, paint, collage, line, color, and shape through activities that are collaborative, open-ended and encourage imaginative play. The materials will be presented as a starting point for the adult and child to interact in an open studio environment. Art tools will be introduced and techniques demonstrated with different media. Documentation will be used to reflect on the learning process and record the children’s ideas and interests over the course of the class.

Art in the Afternoon

This class is designed for kindergarten, preK and preschool students looking for a studio class in the afternoon. Children should be potty-trained and comfortable separating from a parent.

Beginning with an introduction to materials and processes available in the studio we will work toward longer term projects, collaborating with peers and building layers in our work over the course of the session. Materials and processes offered will include drawing, painting, clay, collage and printmaking.
