In this three week series, kids will play with fabric pieces and will sew 3-dimensional objects of their own design. They will learn how to take an idea and make it into a sewn reality. Over the course of the class kids will learn and become more comfortable using a sewing machine, as well as basic sewing notions. Cost includes fabric and notions. Please let us know if you are either bringing a full size sewing machine, or will need to use one of ours.
A note from instructor, Robin Wilson, about sewing machines:
Thoughts on kids’ sewing machines…
I’ve had many parents ask why I insist kids learn on full size sewing machines in our classes when smaller kids’ sewing machines are inexpensive and easily available. It’s been my experience that those sewing machines are made mostly of plastic parts and break quickly and in the end kids become frustrated with trying to work a machine that is geared more towards imaginary play than actual sewing. When kids learn on full size sewing machines they are learning the foundations of a skill they can use for their entire lives. I understand it can be nervous thinking about your child using a sewing machine, but I take great care to teach the basics of safety and to teach children that they are in control of the sewing machine. Parents should consider if they feel their child has the self control required to start and stop a sewing machine while maneuvering fabric before signing up for this class. In my experience most kids at 8 have this ability- but you know your child.
